Marches and protests, revolts and revolution. How do people change the societies they live in? And how do we tell the story of those changes? In this exciting seminar, we’ll examine some pivotal moments in recent history and ask how filmmakers around the world portray the complex layers of social change. THE CINEMA OF SOCIAL JUSTICE includes comedies and tragedies, Hollywood blockbusters and indie hits, documentaries and biopics. We will watch Spike Lee’s DO THE RIGHT THING and 4 LITTLE GIRLS, Boaz Yakin’s REMEMBER THE TITANS, Deepa Mehta’s WATER, Julie Taymor’s FRIDA, Gus Van Sant’s MILK, Mary Dore’s SHE’S BEAUTIFUL WHEN SHE’S ANGRY, Alfonso Cuaron’s ROMA, and Jordan Peele’s GET OUT.
