Tennessee Type: Letterpress in Knoxville and Beyond

Meeting timeCRNSession
THURSDAYS 9:40 am - 10:55 am 45785Full Term

You are going to be looking at a lot of text in your first semester of college, so why not break up all the Times New Roman with some font that is a little more fun? In this class you will take field trips across campus and Knoxville to learn about letterpress as an art form while getting an introduction to a number of arts resources that you can use throughout your time at the University of Tennessee. We will visit the Special Collections department in Hodges Library to see broadsides from Yee-Haw press as well as Knoxville’s current letterpress shop, Striped Light, in Fourth & Gill. Finally, we will also spend time in UT’s own Letterpress Studio to learn the basics of setting type and get a little creative ourselves. Through interacting with letterpress broadsides, you will gain an appreciation for this art and its history while also considering its role in today’s society.
