This course uses the Lin-Manuel Miranda musical “Hamilton” as a lens to reflect on the eighteenth-century ideas about power, kingship, gender, colonies, and democracy that shape our modern world. We will discuss a particular song from the musical each week, paired with a very short historical reading. We will use the soundtrack and footage from the musical to frame our discussions. This class is a great choice for Hamilton fans, early American history buffs, and anyone interested in talking about the origins of our democratic project.
