Black Women Poets

From Phillis Wheatley to Amanda Gorman, this course offers a survey of African-American women who wrote poetry in the U.S. from its beginnings to the contemporary moment. Reading this amazing body of poetry, we will pay close attention to the historic contexts of these texts and how they engage issues of slavery, literacy, sexism, racism, and citizenship. We will celebrate the beauty of these literary works of art.
